Recent Updates regarding our trails

The Good:

  • Work is on-going on the Greenway System and the BackYard Trails across from the Marion Diehl Center off Tyvola are progressing well. Scott Hubbs of the Tarheel Trailblazer's is the main person who has access rights to show other riders around.
  • Bike Trails are on the Master Plan for the Elon Homes Specialty Park, which is approx 300 acres off 521/160. This is the first time Bike Trails have been on a Master Plan from the beginning!
  • The City of Charlotte would like the TT's and DD's to build bike trails at Kilbourne Park (near Eastway & Central) which they hope will drive out the "riff raff" who have taken over the park.
  • Tom Mathews has been working to put bike trails on 40+ acres of the David Weymer Park in north Mecklenburg (off Hwy 115, across from Verhoff Rd), and also 40+ acres on Fisher Farm Park (on Shearer Rd.) in Davidson. Won't be ready for a while though...

The Bad:

  • Charlotte City Council was set to vote on the Whitewater Project which will impact the Bike Trails at Catawba for up to 8-12 months starting possibly at the end of the summer.
  • Renaissance will lose the softball field side trails when the large Coliseum is raized for new development -- although actual construction may not start for a few years.
  • Francis Beatty will eventually have a 5K running trail wiping out much of the bike trails.
  • N. Meck Park will be impacted somewhat by a water main through the middle of the park.

And the Ugly:

  • Although the Trailblazers have spent countless volunteer hours building trails, the bike trails have never been on the Master Plan for any of these Parks, so they are vulnerable to the implementation of their original Master Plan.

What Can We Do?

  • The Tarheel Trailblazers, Dirt Divas and Biking Community need EVERYONE's show of support by shear strength of Membership Numbers. As Tom said, a backing of 350 or 400 SPEAKS A WHOLE LOT LOUDER THAN a membership backing of only 25.
  • Get the numbers up!! Go to these websites and join: www.tarheeltrailblazers.com (indiv. $15/yr; family for $20) and www.dirtdivas.net ($35/yr). It's worth it so we can continue to ride. Join NOW.
